Chemical Weapons Convention

Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC)

Canada is a member of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), an arms control agreement that outlaws the production, stockpiling and use of chemical weapons.  It also regulates certain other toxic chemicals that may be used to produce chemical weapons.  Toxic chemicals and their precursors are classified into three Schedules. The schedules list toxic chemicals and their precursors

The University is required by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada to report on past year’s activities related to the scheduled chemicals on annual basis.  The Canadian National Authority (CNA) is responsible for the collection and monitoring of this data. The Department of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) reports collectively on behalf of the University of Alberta.

Please complete the provided forms if you used, stored, imported* or exported* in any amount chemicals listed in the three Schedules over the past year.

Clarification of the terms "import" and "export":  “The term "import" shall be understood to mean the physical movement of scheduled chemicals into the territory or any other place under the jurisdiction or control of a State Party from the territory or any other place under the jurisdiction or control of another State, excluding transit operations; and the term "export" shall be understood to mean the physical movement of scheduled chemicals out of the territory or any other place under the jurisdiction or control of a State Party into the territory or any other place under the jurisdiction or control of another State, excluding transit operations.
